Visit Treviso

Treviso is a pleasant historic town circled by medieval walls and crossed by canals, just few kilometers from Venice.

The historic old town, which is circled by walls built in the 14th century, offers numerous picturesque places and lively corners that will make your walk through the town a wonderful experience.

PIAZZA DEI SIGNORI
Piazza dei Signori is the main square of Treviso. The town’s civic heart is dominated by Palazzo dei Trecento, the historic town hall erected in the 13th-14th centuries and restored after being bombed in the 2nd World War. Under the Palazzo dei Trecento great vaults host restaurants and cafes where Treviso’s inhabitants meet for a break.

THE CATHEDRAL AND THE BAPTISTERY
Walking from Piazza dei Signori under the arcades of the Calmaggiore, the street with the most elegant shops, you can easily reach the cathedral and the Romanesque baptistery on his side. Beside the impressive Neoclassical façade, the interior is finely decorated with sculptures by Lombardi (in the 13th century chapel at the end of the aisle on the left) and some frescoes by Pordenone on the wall of the right side. Moreover, the main work of art is certainly an altarpiece by Titian, the “Annunciazione”.

LOGGIA DEI CAVALIERI AND PESCHERIA (the fish market)
Following the narrow streets near the Loggia dei Cavalieri, an example of Romanesque building of the town built in the end of the 13th century and located just few walks from Piazza dei Signori, you arrive at the Pescheria, a truly charming small island formed by the branches of the Cagnan, really a pleasant place in Treviso.

PORTA SAN TOMMASO (GATE OF ST. THOMAS)
In the northern part of the town stand other historic houses and buildings like the medieval Porta San Tommaso (Gate of St. Thomas), the most monumental gate of the town. It was erected in 1518 probably by Guglielmo Bergamasco and the exterior is decorated with coat of arms and the Lion of Saint Mark.

Not so far are located the medieval churches of San Francesco and Santa Caterina famous for his fresco cycle “Storie di S. Orsola” by Tommaso da Modena, rescued from Santa Margherita Church in 1883. The complex of Santa Caterina has recently been restructured to house the Civic Museum of Treviso.

THE CITY MUSEUM “LUIGI BAILO”
To be mentioned is also the City Museum “Luigi Bailo” and the rich Pinacoteca (picture gallery) where you can admire masterpieces by Giovanni Bellini, Tiziano, Lorenzo Lotto, Pordenone, Jacopo Bassano, Rosalba Carriera and Francesco Guardi. In the museum is also held the well-known Salce’s Collection constituted by several works of advertising posters, a unique collection in Italy.

 CASA DEI CARRARESI
Do not forget to visit also Casa dei Carraresi, a famous building in the pedestrian area overlooking the river Cagnan and the Pescheria that has become the most important venue for temporary exhibitions in Treviso.

Asolo

Asolo is often defined as one of the most evocative historical centres in Italy; Asolo is a known village for its architectural sights and is famous also for some characters who were fascinated by its originality.

In fact Asolo welcomed several artists, poets, musicians, painters and even Queen Caterina Cornaro, who was elected the lady of Asolo by the Serenissima in 1489 following the forced conveyance of CiproIsland which she had inherited after her husband’s death. The new sovereign (1489-1509) set up a small court composed of characters coming from all over the region and from Cipro too (among the most important ones we can remember Pietro Bembo, Tuzzio Costanzo, Lotto and perhaps Giorgione too) and she increased the renown of the town adding also a touch of nobility.

At her death some centuries of decline followed but starting from the second half of the twentieth century the town has took on a great touristic importance for keeping, for a long time, many Venetian features; for this reason several monuments and urban areas were restored in the past and still at present are under repair.

Anyway what fascinates most right from the start in Asolo, is the aristocratic atmosphere you can breathe through its alleys, in the squares and cafés. A brief walk soon leads you to the historical centre; Porta Loreggia let you go, from south, to the centre line, made of Browning road with palaces having refined windows with three lights; in one of these the English poet Robert Browning wrote ‘Asolando’, that is a collection of lyrics, and he coined, for the occasion, the verb ‘asolare’ which means going liberally for a walk an relaxing before the natural wonders.

In Asolo all the historical centre deserves our attention, from its Cathedral (inside there are some paintings by Lorenzo Lotto, Jacopo Bassano and Lazzaro Bastiani), you can go down along the Captain Loggia, namely the ancient seat of the Asolo Community where there is the Civic Museum; forwards there is the Castle of the Queen, where Caterina Cornaro lived, with its medieval Clock Tower; from the cosy D’Annunzio Square we can go to the arcaded Canova road to see Duse’s house.

THE ANTIQUE TRADE MARKET

An appointment you cannot miss, as it fascinates many tourists as well as experts, is with no doubt the Antique trade Market; for more than twenty years it has been a ritual appointment for all the people fond of ancient objects. More than one hundred exhibitors from all over Italy display some of the most interesting antiques: furniture, jewels, silverware, prints and books, modern objects and articles in general.

Veneto Villas – Marca Trevigiana

Villa Tamagnino Lattes in Istrana

It is one of the first works by the architect Giorgio Massari. The high central body is enclosed between two curved barchesse. (It can be visited).

Villa Marcello in Piombino Dese

It dates back to late 1500s and it was nearly completely adjusted in 1700s. It is a building with two barchesse placed perpendicularly; the whole structure forms a sort of ‘C’. (It can be visited by appointment).

Villa Cornaro Rushin Piombino Dese

It is an oeuvre by Palladio: an almost perfect cube whose two sides, the main ones, are enriched with a double-storey loggia with a tympanum on the top. (It can be visited on Saturdays afternoon).

Villa Rovero Avogadro Bonottoin San Zenone degli Ezzelini

The villa is placed in the centre of the village. It is an extremely scenographical building on three floors with a big central body connected with two lateral towers by means of arcades with loggias.

Villa Contarini Mocenigo in Asolo

It is a building of the sixteenth century and has got a lenghtened form. On its façade there are still some original frescoes by Lattanzio Gamabara from Brescia. On the southern side of the villa another building rose in the eighteenth century. It has got a Venetian-style façade. The two constructions were then linked by an underground tunnel. (It can be visited though at present it is under repair).

Villa Barbaro in Maser

It was designed about in 1560 by Palladio for Daniele and Marcantonio Barbaro. During the construction of this villa Palladio was extremely skilful in trasforming a former house:helinked it to the straight barchesse and hollowed out a nymphaeum on a side of the hill by means of a fish pond from which, thanks to an innovative hydraulic system, the water is carried to the service rooms and then reaches the gardens. Inside the villa contains some frescoes by Paolo Veronese. (It can be visited)

Villa Emo in Vedelago, Fanzolo

It was built by Palladio in 1560 for Leonardo Emo. At present this villa still belongs to Family Emo. It has got a central parallelepiped shaped body in which we find a high tetrastyle pronao following a Doric style. You can enter by means of a large staircase. (It can be visited).

Veneto Villas – Lower Sile

Villa Albrizzi Franchettiin Preganziol, San Trovaso

This villa became famous also because it welcomed some renowned characters such as Foscolo, Byron, Pindemonte and Canova. It represents the inland transposition of the concept of lagoon middle-class house: a cube having just a tympanum; the two barchesse have, on the contrary, palladian features. (It can be visited only outside).

Villa Corner Gabbianelli in Casale sul Sile

It is a fifteenth century construction wanted by Cristina Cornaro. The ground floor has got a colonnade with five arcades; on the whole it is a rather plain building.

Villa Giustinian Ciani Bassettiin Roncade

This villa rises inside an enclosure supplied with square towers on the corners while the towers at the entrance are round. The central building has got two small towers rising on the roof. Though this place is defined a ‘castle’ actually it is a refined residence built about in 1520 for family Giustinian. The building is endowed with two barchesse with an arcade which slightly differ from the central body. (It can be visited by request).
