The Malibran Theater in Venice has very ancient origins. the theater was built by the Grimani family in Campo San Giovanni Grisostomo in the second half of the 1600s and immediately became very famous because the drama sang was recited there, a new genre for the time. Having become a meeting point for the Venetian nobility, it was also known for the grandiose dances that were held between one act and another. The decline began in the mid-1700s. The Malibran Theater returned to the limelight in the early 1900s and throughout the last century continued its activity until it was purchased by the Municipality in 1992. Thus extensive restoration work began. From 1996 it was used as a backing of the La Fenice Theater destroyed by fire. Today it is home to numerous prose, opera and dance performances and has also become the ATELIER MALIBRAN, a permanent production and experimentation laboratory, supported by the La Fenice Foundation, for young people studying theater at the University of Ca 'Foscari, scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and music at the Benedetto Marcello Conservatory.
